Technology Should Be Designed. Not Left to Chance.

You wouldn't build a home or commercial building without architectural plans. So why are critical technology systems so often figured out after construction has already started?
Today, technology is part of the infrastructure of almost every building.
Networks. Wi-Fi. Security. Audio and video. Lighting and lighting control. Communications. Access control. Conference systems. Automation. Shades. Surveillance. Entertainment. Life-safety interfaces.
Yet on many projects, these systems receive surprisingly little attention during the design phase.
The architect designs the building. The electrical engineer designs the electrical infrastructure. The mechanical engineer designs HVAC. The lighting may be partially addressed by several different parties.
Then technology is left for later and design to the bidders. That's when problems start.
The Cost of Designing Technology in the Field
When technology isn't properly designed before construction, decisions get made by individual contractors as the project progresses.
The electrician puts an outlet where they think the display will go. The security contractor determines camera locations. The AV company decides where equipment should live. The network gets designed after walls are already framed. Lighting controls are selected without fully considering shades, automation or how the spaces will actually be used.
Each contractor may do their part correctly.

Lighting itself has become a technology system, incorporating sophisticated controls, dimming, occupancy sensing, daylight harvesting, motorized shades and automation.

Design Starts With How the Building Will Be Used
Good technology design doesn't start with a product list.
It starts with questions.
How will people use the building?
What needs to happen automatically?
Where will people work, meet, entertain or collaborate?
What should be visible—and what should disappear into the architecture?
What happens when the internet goes down?
What needs to be serviceable?
What technologies are likely to change over the next 10 or 20 years?
Those answers drive the infrastructure and system design.
Products come later.
This is particularly important because technology specifications can easily become manufacturer-driven. We believe the design should determine the products—not the other way around.
Lighting Deserves the Same Attention
Lighting is one of the most important elements of a space and one of the easiest to get wrong. More fixtures don't necessarily create better lighting.
Good lighting considers architecture, task requirements, color temperature, beam angles, glare, daylight, artwork, finishes, furniture and how a space changes from daytime to evening.
We approach lighting as part of the overall technology environment, coordinating fixture design with lighting controls, automated shades and other systems.
The objective isn't simply to turn lights on and off.
It's to make the architecture look and feel the way it was intended.

One of the most expensive phrases on a construction project is:
"We'll figure that out later."
Later often means after the drywall is installed.
Or after the ceiling is finished.
Or after the millwork arrives.
Or after someone discovers that the necessary conduit, power, ventilation or network connection isn't there.
A relatively inexpensive decision during design can become an expensive change order during construction.
